Senator Richard Gordon proposed a brilliant idea of making the prisoners more productive during their while they are serving their sentence.
Gordon asked the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) to allocate a budget to allow prisoners to work in prison.
During the hearing on the budget of the Department of Justice, Gordon suggested that prisoners whose jail terms have almost been completely served their sentence could be made to work on infrastructure projects of the government.
Prisoners can help to plant trees, clean the rivers and plant vegetables and trees to help the government to improve agricultural production in the country.
He also suggested that prisoners must be given allowance in exchange of their labor.
“They could plant trees on denuded mountains so that floods could be prevented. They could also desilt rivers or they could fix damaged irrigation canals or systems to improve crop production in the country. They could be given allowances for the community work,” the senator said”
The Senator believes that by the use of prison labor, inmates may reformed very well before being released into the society in the same time, they are contributing in fixing the problems of the government.
“This way, the inmates are provided an occupation in preparation for their reintegration into society. At the same time, we can also start the reforestation of our mountains and prevent floods, especially in Central Luzon,” he added.
Gordon also praised the officials of Bucor Ret. PC/Supt Rolando Asuncion, BuCor officer-in-charge, revealed that Samsung Electronics is interested in hiring prisoners as their workers for their production line.
