According to DPWH website, the said project aimed to “maximize the current position of Mindoro Island as “Luzon’s Gateway to the South” to the Island Provinces of Visayas and Mindanao Region through opening roads to faster and efficient transport of goods and people along the existing Nautical Highway.”

It also help to “boost agriculture and ecotourism” in Mindoro Island.

The proposed bridge involves the construction of a 15 kilometer Super Bridge, two (2) or four (4) lanes with an optional pedestrian/bicycle lane, which will link Mindoro Island to the Province of Batangas.

The bridge will cover the 8.5 km from Mindoro Island to Verde Island and 6.5 km from Verde Island to Batangas, over a 10m – 300m water depth.

It might be the declare as the new longest bridge in the Philippines and the first floating ship in Asia if the construction of the mega bridge completed.

According to former Batangas Vice Mayor Mark Leviste, the project would cost $1.2-1.8 billion and it might take two years to complete the bridge. It also can withstand Cyclones up to 350 kph.

San Miguel Corporation also expressed their interest in the said project and willing to offer their service to build the bridge.

“San Miguel Corporation offered to construct the said super bridge that has a total length of 15 km and will cover the 6.5 kilometers from Barangay Ilijan in Batangas City to Verde Island and 8.5 kilometers that will continue from Verde Island to Barangay Sinandigan in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, over a 10m – 300m water depth” Oriental Mindoro Governor Alfonso Umali Jr. said.

The Batangas-Mindoro bridge is just one of the infrastructure planned to construct under the “Build, build, build” program of the Duterte administration.
