Infamous collapsed wooden bridge in Zamboanga City costs 12 million pesos

Remember the infamous wooden bridge which collapsed and made several politicians swim in dirty sea water? According to House Committee on Housing and Urban Development chair Alfredo Benitez it’s cost 12 million pesos.

Benitez revealed the cost of the wooden bridge in a press conference in Quezon City.

The incident quickly went viral on the the internet because several officials including Benitez, Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar and Representative Celso Lobregat and other government officials fell into the filthy water after the wooden bridge that they’re passing collapse during their inspection in a housing unit built by National Housing Authority (NHA) in  Barangay Rio Hondo.

Some netizens poked fun at the officials fell in the murky waters, however others were worried that the houses may also collapse if they’re poorly built like the infamous wooden bridge.

“Yung wooden bridge na nilakaran namin ay may cost na P12 million,” Benitez said.

He also said that the costs of the houses raised on piles over the surface of water costs only 20,000 pesos less than building concrete housing units in land.

“Ordinarily, yung isang housing unit na tinatayo ng NHA sa lupa na semento umaabot ng P240,000 per unit. Dito sa house on stilts na ininspection natin, ang cost niya ay P220,000. Mas mura lang nang P20,000,” he said.

Most of the recipients of the housing units are from the Badjao community who are known for living near the sea.

Benitez was worried that because of this anomalies, the houses built may also collapse.

The Housing Committee Chair said that he’s already planning to investigate the housing units as the Congress resumes sessions.

“Pagbalik na pagbalik, naghihintay na lang ako ng bakanteng kwarto sa Congress,” Benitez said

Officials from NHA and Department of Works and Highways (DPWH) will be invited in the investigation.

The housing in Barangay Rio Rondo was planned during the Aquino administration.
